NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma soccer team had 12 players named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 teams on Tuesday. The Sooners had the third most players honored in the Big 12, including 10 first team honorees. The 10 honorees marks the eighth straight season that OU has placed at least five student-athletes on the first team.
The 10 members on the first team is also the most under head coach Nicole Nelson and the third most in program history behind the 11 in 2005 and the 12 in 2000.
Michelle Alexander, Bailey Boulware, Sage Coralli, Dria Hampton, Lisa Jett, Kelsey Kraft, Caitlin Mooney, Katharine Nutman, Brianna Turang and Kathryn Watson were all named to the first team while Samantha Howell and Amy Petrikin were second team honorees.
Alexander, a senior and energy management major, is making her third appearance on the first team. She is also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree. Nutman (history) and Hampton (sociology-criminology) are both making their second straight appearances on the first team. Nutman was one of 12 players in the Big 12 to record a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Kraft (supply chain management) is also making her second appearance on the list after receiving first team honors in 2009.
The remaining eight student-athletes all made the first career appearances on the academic squad.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Sooners, seeded eighth, will play in play in the first round of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 2 against the No. 1 seed Oklahoma State. The game will be played at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, at 5:30 p.m.
