NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma soccer team placed nine members on the first and second Academic All-Big 12 teams announced on Tuesday. The total was the fourth best in the conference among the 11 participating institutions.
Among the Sooners named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team were seniors Shana All, Colleen Keester and Jennifer Nichols, juniors Helen Ajufo and Katie Corbitt and sophomores Ashley Farrand and Kate Leyendecker. Senior Allyson Kucera and junior Traci Dickenson were second-team honorees.
Leyendecker was one of two soccer players in the conference that were recognized with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Oklahoma has accumulated at least nine or more academic honorees in each of the last four seasons. Three members of the senior class collected their third straight first team honor (All, Keester and Nichols) and Ajufo and Corbitt were honored for the second straight year on the first team.
Kucera is also a three-time member, placing on the second team in each of the last two seasons and earning first team accolades in 2005.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 67 first team members combined with 21 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
