NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Patricia Aoki of the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team was honored as Co-Big 12 Gymnast of the Week according to the conference office Tuesday afternoon. This is the second consecutive week that the Sao Paolo, Brazil native has received the award. Junior Richelle Simpson of Nebraska also received the league recognition.
Aoki was also the catalyst behind the Sooners upset of No. 1 UCLA inside Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. She registered scores of 9.825 on vault, 9.875 on beam and 9.900 on floor. Aoki finished seventh or better on all three events in the four team meet.
For the first time in seven meets, Aoki did not compete in the all-around during OU competitions at Arizona and in the UCLA Invitational. Despite the lineup change, the results were impressive again. Aoki was the top OU finisher on vault (9.925) and floor (9.900) with second and third place finishes on the respective events. Aoki also notched a career-high 9.900 on beam. The two-time Big 12 Gymnast of the Week has set 18 career-highs in the last eight meets.
In other women's gymnastics news, the Sooners moved up to No. 9 in the GymInfo poll. The ranking is OU's highest of the season and is the first time OU has been in the top 10 since early in the 2002 season.
OU closes the regular season with a dual meet at Stanford, Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m., inside Maples Pavilion.
