NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma wrestling team’s 2009 recruiting class continued to gain recognition Tuesday, as the class was notched in the top three in two national rankings. The Sooners landed at No. 2 overall according to The Open Mat and third by InterMat.

“We are really excited about this class and for the fact that major wrestling publications have recognized the excellence of the group,” OU head coach Jack Spates said. “Some of the men have already arrived on campus and are eager to return the program to its storied excellence.”

The 11-member class is highlighted by five commitments in InterMat’s Top 100, led by No. 7 Jake Kememer of Hempfield, Pa. Twins Matt and Nick Lester out of Eureka, Mo., are slated 18th and 86th overall, respectfully. Alex Ekstrom from Palmyra-Macedon, N.Y., ranks 28th and No. 46 Tyler Caldwell from Goddard, Kan., complete the ranked group.

Additionally, Oklahoma picked up two commitments from wrestlers ranked in the top 15 in their respective weight classes. The class combined to win 24 state championships, spanning seven states across the country.

The Open Mat described the Sooner program as gaining “A bona fide No. 1 (Kememer) and several more within the top eight in the country at their respective weights. That’s a ton of talent, and most of them have significant national credentials. This class could contribute the bulk of their starters for years to come.”
