Sept. 13, 2007
NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will open the 2007 fall schedule this weekend as they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational, Sept. 14-16.
This is the second year in a row the Sooners have opened the fall slate with a trip to Navy and it marks the third time in the last four years that head coach Paul Lockwood and the Sooners have opened in Annapolis.
"Even though we have been practicing for less than two weeks, I think the players are excited to get the fall season started," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
Representing the Sooners this weekend will be senior Federico Chavarria, senior Ryan Thomas and junior Sergey Avdeyev. The trio will not be new to the invitational as all three traveled east last September to represent the Sooners at this event.
"These three guys came last year and had good results and it helped their games in the long run. That is the reason I brought them back. We are all very excited to be back at this great tournament," Lockwood continued.
The Sooners will begin play at 2 p.m., Friday, when they square off with Navy. Saturday, OU will battle St. Joseph's at 2 p.m. Oklahoma finishes the tournament with a match against Maryland and Princeton on Sunday.
All of the matches, weather permitting, will be played outdoors at the U.S. Naval Academy. Should the weather become a factor the matches will be played indoors at the Severn Valley Tennis Club.
Also participating this weekend are the Arkansas Razorbacks, Maryland Terrapins, Navy Midshipmen, Princeton Tigers and St. Joseph's Hawks.
Last season in Annapolis, Oklahoma went 6-2 in singles matches and 5-1 in doubles matches.
Oklahoma returns six letterwinners from last season's team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished 20-9 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 competition. It was the first time since 2005 that the team was selected to tournament. Lockwood returns to the helm of the Sooners for his 21st season.
The Sooners continue their fall schedule on the road next week when they travel to Waco, Texas, for the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate, Sept. 21-23.
-Sergey Avdeyev completed the Navy Invitational in 2006 with a singles record of 2-0 and 2-1 in doubles.
-Federico Chavarria is 4-2 all-time in singles matches and 6-0 in doubles matches at the Navy Invitational. He competed in 2004 as a freshman and as a junior last fall.
-Ryan Thomas finished 1-2 in singles and 3-0 in doubles play last season in Annapolis.
-None of the matches will count towards a team's win/loss record. The invitational is a round-robin tournament between the individuals and not the teams.
