Ten Sooners Earn Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- As the Oklahoma soccer teams prepares for the 2006 Big 12 Soccer Championship in San Antonio, Texas, the conference office announced on Tuesday the Academic All-Big 12 Teams.   The Sooners placed 10 members on the first and second teams, the third highest total in the conference. 

Among the Sooners named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team were seniors Andrea Hurley and Savannah Scott, juniors Shana All, Colleen Keester and Jennifer Nichols and sophomores Helen Ajufo and Katie Corbitt.  Senior Kady Kelly and juniors Allyson Kucera and Jayme Seetin were OU’s second-team honorees.

Oklahoma has accumulated 22 academic honorees in the last two seasons and for two Sooners, Hurley and Seetin, the 2006 awards marked the third in their collegiate careers.  In addition, four members of the junior class collected their second straight honor (All, Keester, Kucera and Nichols).

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 67 first team members combined with 21 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The 2006 Sooners (8-10-1 overall, 3-6-1 Big 12), seeded No. 7, take to the field on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. against No. 2 seed Oklahoma State in San Antonio, Texas, at the Blossom Soccer Stadium.  The game is the twelth all-time meeting in the Bedlam series but the first in the postseason.
