NORMAN, Okla. - The 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma volleyball team held its annual crimson and cream scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Houston Huffman Center on the OU campus. Behind double-doubles from senior Brianne Barker, sophomore Morgan Reynolds and freshman Tara Dunn, the cream topped crimson in four sets (25-11, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21).
"Our defense was exceptional today," said Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo. "Tara Dunn played very well, as did Morgan Reynolds. Morgan worked very hard this offseason on defense and it showed today. Caitlin (Higgins) and Sallie (McLaurin) also played well. We had too many service errors, but we served aggressively. Overall, we were pleased especially with our freshmen."
Barker dished out 41 assists and 13 digs in the win. Dunn's 14 kills and 14 digs led all scorers, as she hit .267 and added three service aces in the win. Reynolds' 12 kills went along with 12 digs. Suzy Boulavsky also added 12 kills, hitting .345 with just two attack errors in 29 attempts. Maria Fernanda had 12 digs as the cream team out-dug the crimson team 59-45.
Dunn's three service aces accounted for all but one of the team's service aces. Newcomers Grace Whitley and Carlee Roethlisberger led the team with three blocks each. The team hit .273 with Barker's .667 (seven kills) leading the way.
Caitlin Higgins and Sallie McLaurin led the crimson with 12 kills each. Freshmen setters Kaitlyn Drawe (14) and Caroline Weir (13) split duties at the position. Keila Rodriguez and Eden Williams had 11 digs each, while Higgins had 10 to record a double-double. The crimson team combined for 14.5 blocks, including McLaurin's 11 for the team's second double-double.
The crimson team registered seven service aces, including three by Williams and two each by Higgins and Rodriguez. The match featured 22 ties and 11 lead changes. The cream team produced a 60 percent sideout percentage for the match, including a match-best 75 percent in the first set.
"Grace (Whitley) and Carlee (Roethlisberger) had a chance to work with Brianne (Barker) on timing today and our freshmen had a chance to get more comfortable and that's key," Restrepo added. "What we saw today was a lot of players that could give us very valuable minutes."
The Sooners open the 2011 season next weekend, Aug. 26-27, hosting the Nike Invitational at McCasland Field House.
