Meldrum and Edge’s Finale
Seniors Lisa Meldrum and Hope Edge will play in their final Big 12 Championships. Both have been tremendous contributors to the team. Meldrum has recorded 24 top-10 finishes in her collegiate career, winning two of those tournaments. Edge has earned five top-10 finishes in her collegiate career.
At the 2003 Big 12 Championships, the Sooners finished fourth behind champion Oklahoma State, Misouri and Texas. OU recorded a team total of 923. Leading the Sooners was Hope Edge who tied for 11th.
The Sooners won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (April 12-13), which is played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course annually, for the fourth straight year. The Sooners have won the last four years by an average of 23.5 strokes. In 2001, they won by 19 strokes, in 2002 by 33 strokes and in 2003 by 22 strokes. This past week the Sooners out-paced Southern Methodist by 20 strokes.
Two-time Susie Maxwell Champ
Senior Lisa Meldrum won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic individual title after shooting a one-under-par 215 in the tournament. Meldrum won the Susie Maxwell two years ago, where she shot a 211.
When senior Lisa Meldrum has finished in the top five, the Sooners have excelled as well. In the six tournaments that Meldrum placed in the top five individually, OU has finished no worse than sixth and have won the tournament title three times. When Meldrum has finished below the top five, the Sooners have only reached the top five on one occasion.
Golfer of the Month
Each month, the Big 12 Conference names a Big 12 Golfer of the Month and the Sooners have managed to earn two of the last five honors. Senior Lisa Meldrum swiped up the award in September after finishing first and second in the two tournaments OU entered. Sophomore Amparo Gala earned it in February for carding a career-best 220 in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and earning eigth-place. The Sooners are the only team in the Big 12 to have earned it more than once.
