Norman, Okla.- After winning a tough three set match Wednesday at the ITA Regional tournament in Tulsa, junior Rachel Cox advanced to the main draw where she will join teammates Gabby Baker, Chelsea Orr, Monica Purice and Irina Lykina.

The qualifying round had a draw of 64 with only 16 players advancing to the main draw, which begins Thursday.

Cox started out her day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lindsey Erickson of Creighton.  She then advanced to the second round where she had a tough match against Nebraska’s Maria Ring.  Cox won the first set 7-6, lost the second 6-7 and then won the third set super tiebreaker 10-3 to earn herself a spot in the main draw.

“It was a very good day for Rachel,” said head coach Mark Johnson.  “She fought hard and won against a very good player in the second round.  I am very proud of her.”

Also playing for the Sooners Wednesday was senior Anne Carter.  Carter was defeated by Missouri’s Kaitlyn McKenzie 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

Sophomore Brittany Baldy was also entered to play, however, due to a wrist injury that occurred last week she was forced to default.  Junior Christi Baxley, who had a bye into the main draw based on previous rankings, will also be forced to default due to an ankle injury that occurred Monday in practice.

“It is just too early to risk anything,” Johnson said.  “We want them to go ahead and heal before they compete.”

The Sooners will return to the court Thursday morning with five players in the singles main draw of 64 and three doubles teams in a draw of 64.
