NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women’s golf team fired a first-round 289 (+1) Friday at the 12-team Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., good for third place at the par-72 Longbow Golf Club.

First-place Colorado shot an 11-under-par 277 and leads second-place Notre Dame by 11 shots. The Sooners trail Notre Dame by just one stroke and are four shots in front of Florida International and Furman.  Four Sooners are in the top 23 in the 71-person field.

“It was kind of an up-and-down day,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “Some of our girls hung in there and finished strong. We’re supposed to get some really tough conditions tomorrow and Sunday, so we’re going to have to get off to a strong start and be patient.”

Chirapat Jao-Javanil shot a team-best 71 (-1) on Friday. The sophomore is tied for 10th place, five strokes behind leader Emily Talley of Colorado. Jao-Javanil recorded five birdies on the day.

Joining Jao-Javanil in the top 20 are Taylor Schmidt and Emily Collins, who each carded an even-par 72 for a 14th-place tie. Schmidt was 1 under through 14 holes, while Collins birdied three of the last four holes.

Junior Jacki Marshall carded a 2-over 74 and stands in a tie for 23rd place. She recorded a double bogey on the first hole before shooting even par over the final 17 holes. Sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 5-over 77 and is in a tie for 38th place.

Competing as an individual for the Sooners is Jade Staggs, who recorded an 88 (+16) and stands in 70th place.

The Sooners begin Saturday’s second round at 10 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
