NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma women's basketball standout Phylesha Whaley took part in the 2000 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Challenge in Philadelphia last Saturday. The game was part of the NCAA Women's Final Four activities and featured the nation's top 20 senior basketball players. Whaley was a member of the East Team, which was led to a 73-58 victory by East MVP Shaka Massey of Louisiana Tech.
Whaley, who became OU's all-time leading scorer this season, had five points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action. She also was credited with one assist and one steal.
Leading scorers for the East Team were Massey (18 points) and Nebraska guard Nicole Kubik (12 points). The East squad out-rebounded the West, 36-32, and shot 45.6 percent (28-for-61) from the floor. The East led the competition 42-27 at the half.
The West team was led in scoring by Louisiana Tech's Betty Lennox (14 points) and West MVP Grace Daley of Tulane (nine points). The West made 37.7 percent of its field goals (20-for-53) and went 14-for-17 from the free-throw line, as did The East team.
The Big 12 was represented with four players in the game: Edwina Brown, Texas, Stacy Frese, Iowa State, Kubik, and Whaley.
