The No. 8 University of Oklahoma women’s golf team shot a first-round 293 (+5) at the Las Vegas Founders Women’s Collegiate Showdown on Monday in Las Vegas, Nev., and is in second place after 18 holes. The Sooners’ first round tied for their lowest first-round score of the season (the other came at the Kent Youel Invitational last week). OU heads into the second round trailing No. 7 ranked New Mexico by five strokes.

Three Sooners are in the top 15 heading into second round play. Senior Lisa Meldrum is leading the Sooners after carding a two-below-par 70 in the first round. Meldrum is in third place and trails the leader, Trisha Quick (Colorado State), by only two strokes. Sophomore Amparo Gala recorded a 72 (E) and is tied for fifth. Gala’s round tied for her season best this fall. Junior Emily Milberger shot a 74 (+2) and is tied for 12th while senior Hope Edge is tied for 33rd after carding a 77 (+5). Rouding out the Sooner squad is Freshman Jaclyn Stelzer who is tied for 53rd with a first-round score of 80 (+8).

Oklahoma will play 18 holes Tuesday and conclude the tournament of Wednesday. The 15-team field that includes three top-25 teams is playing at the 6,914-yard, par-72 Anthem Country Club.
