NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma junior right fielder Amber Spaulding has been named the Big 12 Softball Player of the Week for the games played March 6-12, the league office announced Tuesday. It marks Spaulding’s first league weekly accolade and OU's second honor this season as senior Kristin Vesely was selected for the week of Feb. 21.
Spaulding led the 14th-ranked Sooners to a perfect 5-0 record this past week. She hit .529 (9-for-17) with 13 RBI, including a home run in four consecutive games. The Fontana, Calif. native also recorded a 1.353 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
Against Tulsa, Spaulding contributed three RBI, including a two-run homer to the OU effort. She went 3-for-4 against North Texas with a solo HR while finishing the day with a four RBI outing against Utah Valley State at the OU/Worth Invitational.
Spaulding, who owns a five-game hitting streak, collected her team-leading sixth home run in addition to a double on a 2-for-2 performance in the Sooners' second victory over Utah Valley State. The four RBI recorded against UVSU marked a single-game career high for Spaulding.
Spaulding and the Sooners return to the field this Wednesday against Utah at 6:30 p.m. (CST) in the first game of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Oklahoma will round out pool play with a 3:30 p.m. contest against No. 7 Alabama on Thursday followed by another 3:30 p.m. game against No. 23 Fresno State on Friday. The tournament portion of the Classic will begin on Saturday and last through Sunday.
