NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team received seven of 10 first-place votes and tallied 79 points to receive top billing in the 2010 Big 12 coaches' preseason poll, as announced today by the league office. The selection marks the second straight season in which Oklahoma has been chosen as the preseason favorite.
"I appreciate and respect the opinions of the coaches in the Big 12," said OU head coach Patty Gasso. "The Big 12 will be very strong in 2010 and we expect every game to be a battle. This conference is competitive and it will take a lot of hard work and consistency to finish on top."
The Sooners return 12 letterwinners from last season’s Big 12 championship team. Among those returning include 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year Amber Flores and 2009 NFCA All-Central Region first team selection Lindsey Vandever. In all, OU returns six of its all-Big 12 team honorees from 2009 and welcomes five newcomers.
Missouri (75) was chosen second, while Baylor (61), Nebraska (49) and Texas (48) rounded out the top five.
Oklahoma opens the 2010 on Feb. 12 against Michigan and UCF at the National Softball Collegiate Invitational in Clermont, Fla.
