Women's Golf Completes Best Fall Season In History
November 19, 2003

The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team recently concluded its best fall season in Sooner golf history.  The Sooners are ranked No. 12 in Golfstat and No. 14 in Golfweek. The ranking is the highest the Sooners have ever finished in a fall season poll. Adding to its list of achievements, OU recorded two tournament championships. Oklahoma won the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate (Oct. 6-8) and the Kent Youel Invitational (Nov. 4-5) in back-to-back outings. It marked the first time the Sooners have won two tournaments in a fall season.

OU also earned fourth-place honors at the NCAA Fall Preview, which included 17 nationally-ranked teams, including the top 11 in the country. The Sooners recorded another fourth-place finish at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. Oklahoma also earned a sixth-place finish at the Las Vegas Founders Women’s Collegiate Showdown to finish the fall season.

"We are so excited about our two tournament wins this fall," Head Coach Carol Ludvigson said. "Anytime you win a tournament in the fall, it’s quite an achievement because it’s the point in the year when you’re still trying to find your starting five combination."

Individually, the Sooners had at least two golfers finish in the top 20 in every tournament. Senior Lisa Meldrum led the Sooner squad all fall and finished in the top five in every tournament. Meldrum earned four second-place finishes and one fifth-place finish. She is also currently ranked as the No. 10 golfer in the country, according to Golfweek. Meldrum added Big 12 Golfer of the Month for September to her list of accomplishments.

Two other Sooners also finished in the top five of a tournament this fall. Junior Emily Milberger tied for fifth place at the Kent Youel Invitational and senior Hope Edge earned fifth-place honors at the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate.

"I am very encouraged about our depth," Ludvigson said. "We had two individuals in the top 20 in every single tournament. We still have a few players that didn’t play much in the fall, but I’m also really excited about the opportunity they might have this spring. This just gives us a really good basis to go into the spring with."

The Sooners begin their quest for the NCAA Championships when they open the spring season at the Puerto Rico Invitatonal Feb 22-24.
