ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team placed fifth out of 20 teams today at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. The Sooners shot 10-over par at The Championship Course on the final day to finish at 880 for the tournament.

"We played extremely poor today," said Sooner Head Coach Gregg Grost. "This was easily the worst round we've played this year."

Facing a course playing harder than yesterday's opening rounds, no team was under par on the day.

"The course was set up very hard and very long," said Grost. "The scores across the field were indicative of the difficulty of the golf course today."

Sophomore Cody Freeman was the top Sooner finisher on the weekend, tying for 18th place. Freeman recorded his second straight top 20 finish, following last week's 11th place showing at The Ridges Intercollegiate. Chris James, John Kidwell and Chris Cureton tied for 33rd place, finishing at six-over par (222). Cureton rebounded from an opening round of 78 to shoot even par on the last 36 holes.

Brigham Young won the team championship by 10 strokes over second-place USC. BYU finished at eight-under par for the tournament.

Individual champion Nigel Spence of Colorado State took over first place from UNLV's Jeremy Anderson by recording a two-under par 70 to finish at 208. Spence finished two strokes ahead of Anderson, who shot a 74 in the final round.
