NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men’s tennis team suffered its third Big 12 loss at the hands of second-ranked Baylor on Saturday, losing 6-1 at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Bears improve to 21-2 and 6-0 in the Big 12 while the Sooners fall to 15-5 and 1-3 in Big 12 play.

“We competed really hard today,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “We just weren’t able to win tough matches. We are looking forward to next week when we play three more Big 12 teams.”

The Sooners fell behind early after dropping two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) were the first to walk off the courts with a decisive victory over BU’s Reiner Neurohr and Jon Reckewey, 8-3.

The duo of junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) and sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) fought hard against Baylor’s 20th-ranked pair of Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga, only to lose the match, 8-3.

Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) and sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) were the final chance for OU to take the doubles point. The Sooner team started out solid but were overpowered by BU’s Matias Marin and Jason Gould, 8-4.
In singles action, Oklahoma claimed one victory out of the six matches. Fukala faced off against BU’s 90th-ranked Matias Marin at the No. 2 spot. The two were the last players to finish as Fukala dispatched Marin, 6-2, 6-4.   Ivanov had a tight first set against third-ranked Dorsch, but was still overcome in both sets, 7-5, 6-3, while Velicka lost to nationally-ranked Zgaga, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3.
The Sooners take on three Big 12 teams next week. OU prepares for Bedlam against No. 26 Oklahoma State on Wed., April 14, at the DuBois Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla., at 2 p.m. OU then hosts back-to-back matches against Nebraska on Sat., April 17, and Texas Tech on Sun., April 18, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Action is set to begin at 12 p.m on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
