NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma senior Brittany Borman and junior Jacy Bennett were among the 10 women student-athletes named to the Capital One Academic All-District track and field first team, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The duo will advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America® honors.
This is Borman’s second year to earn a spot on the all-district team and she earned third-team Academic All-America® honors in 2011. Borman, with a 3.74 in health and exercise science, is a two-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Scholar Athlete. She is a five-time Sooner Scholar and member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She has been a member of the President’s Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) four times and she is a nominee for a 2012 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Borman recently qualified for her third consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The defending national champion in the javelin, she also qualified in the discus. She had the third-best marks at the West preliminary in the two events. She is the OU program record holder in both events. She set the mark in the javelin with a 194 feet, 11 inches at the 2012 Sun Angel Classic and that mark met the A standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Her record-setting mark in the discus, 186-1, was set in her sophomore season. Her season best in the discus is 183-0, a mark she recorded at the 2012 John Jacobs Invitational.
She has won two Big 12 titles in the javelin (2011 and 2012) and two conference titles in the discus (2010 and 2011). She is a three-time NCAA All-American and a seven-time All-Big 12 honoree.
Bennett also earned her second consecutive all-district honor with a 4.0 GPA in supply chain management. She set a collegiate best of 12-6.75 in the pole vault at the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, the fourth best mark in school history. She tied for fourth at the Big 12 Indoor meet with a 12-9.50. She has 10 marks over 12-0 in 2012 after just three in her previous two seasons. She is a five-time member of the President’s Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) and is a five-time selection as a Sooner Scholar and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She is a two-time academic All-Big 12 honoree as well.
Borman and her Sooner teammates who have qualified will head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 6-9.
