The Oklahoma men’s tennis team snapped their two-match losing streak against Nebraska with a crucial 6-1 win on Saturday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners improve to 16-6 and 2-4 in the Big 12 while the Cornhuskers drop to 9-12 and 0-7 Big 12 play.

“We played hard and competed well today,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “It was a good win because Nebraska beat us the past couple of years. We look forward to our season closer against Texas Tech tomorrow.”

Oklahoma started the match by clinching the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) and sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) cruised past Nebraska’s Jose Rivera and Joerg Barthel, while sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) celebrated a decisive triumph over NU”s Gerhard Posch and Ryan Jay, making the Sooner duo 4-0 versus conference opponents.

OU had the match when the team posted five singles victories. Fukala, Gregg and Velicka came out on top with easy two-set victories over their opponents at the No. 2, 6 and 3 spots, respectively. Garrison started off with a tight 7-5 first-set win, and then finished off NU’s Jeff Nabity in the final set, 6-4. Junior Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) returned after not playing for five matches to face a tough three-set game against Nebraska’s James Clow. Tanasoiu easily captured the first set, 6-3, and then fell in the second by two points, 4-6. The final set ended in favor of the Sooners when Tanasoiu dispatched Clow, 6-4.

Sophomore Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) faced tough competition against NU’s Gerhard Posch at the No. 1 spot. Ivanov fell in the first match, 6-4, and then fought harder in the second, only to lose the match by one point, 7-6. The loss marked the only defeat for the Sooners.
