ARDMORE, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team is in seventh place after the first 36 holes of The Maxwell Invitational at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla., after concluding Saturday’s play with a two-round total of 544 (-16). OU opened the tournament with a 9-under-par 271 before carding a second-round 273 (-7) at Dornick Hills’ 6,543-yard, par 70 layout.
OU was paced by senior Nick Sheedy and freshman Ben Blundell who sit at +2 and in a tie for 28th. Sheedy had rounds of 72 and 70 while Blundell rebounded from an opening-round 74 by shooting 68 in the afternoon.
J.J. Wood is a stroke back at +3 after rounds of 72 and 71 and sits in a tie for 35th.
Jesse Schutte stands in a tie for 56th at +9. The Big 12 Newcomer of the Year opened with a 2-over-par 72 before shooting 77 in Saturday’s afternoon round.
Rounding out the OU team scoring was junior Phillip Bryan who carded back-to-back 76s.
Playing as an individual, freshman Tyler Rody stands in a tie for 35th at +3 after an even-par second round. The Andover, Kansas, product is competing in just his second collegiate event.
Completing the OU individual scoring were freshmen Eric Durbin and Brandon Pelletier who sit at +5 and +12 respectively. Durbin is in 41st after rounds of 74 and 71 while Pelletier rebounded from a morning-round 78 with a 74 to finish the day’s play in 63rd.
Oklahoma State leads the team standings after firing a two-round 518 (-42). The Cowboy’s broke the Maxwell 36-hole scoring record of 524 and the single-round record of 259 with their second-round 257 (-23). OSU’s opening-round 19-under-par 261 marked its second-best opening round in the 15 years of the tournament, two shots off of last year’s record-best 259.
The Maxwell uses a unique scoring system where rather than taking the four lowest 18-hole individual scores to compile a team score, the four lowest scores per hole are being counted.
Colt Knost of SMU heads to Sunday’s play leading for medalist honors after rounds of 64 and 61. The Pilot Point, Texas senior’s second-round 61 broke the single round record of 63 set by Alex Noren (OSU) in the final round of the 2005 Maxwell. Mustang teammate Scott Barton also opened the tournament with first-round 6-under-par 64, which tied a first-round tournament record.
