Sooners Defeated in Pre-Qualifier

NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team completed rounds at the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All American Saturday in Tulsa, Okla. No Sooners advanced to the qualifier as the team finished 1-3 for the day.

Sophomore Sergey Avdeyev was the first match for the Sooners where he defeated Kevin Dessauer of LSU.  Avdeyev won the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, moving him to the second round of play.  In his next match Avdeyev was defeated by Troy’s Irving Morales.  Avdeyev lost the first set 2-6, but Avdeyev came back in the second set, 6-2. He eventually lost the match in the third set, 1-6, to end his run in the tournament.

Freshman Ondrej Kacmar suffered a loss to Texas’ Rook Schellenberg in two sets 4-6, 2-6.  Schellenberg went undefeated on the day and will be competing for a seat in the qualifier Sunday at 11 a.m.

Junior Federico Chavarria received a bye in the first round of the tournament.  Starting in the second round, Chavarria faced James Clow of Nebraska.  Chavarria lost the match in two sets 2-6, 4-6.

Chavarria will team up with senior Marek Velicka to compete in the doubles qualifier Monday Oct. 2.  The duo must win three matches to advance to the main draw doubles competition.

Velicka was admitted to the singles main draw of the tournament and will begin play Thursday Oct. 5.  Live scoring for the matches can be viewed at  Results for the matches will be posted on as soon as they become available.
