NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA tournament as the Sooners cruised past UMKC, 4-0, inside the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion on Friday afternoon.
“I felt like we did a pretty good job of coming out and being aggressive,” John Roddick said. “We only had one little hiccup at No. 3 doubles, but they recovered nicely and were actually up match point there.”
Oklahoma (19-3, 5-0 Big 12) will face in-state foe Tulsa (19-8) on Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m. after the Hurricane downed No. 35 Minnesota, 4-2. The winner of tomorrow’s match advances to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia. The team championships will be held May 18-21.
The Sooners and Hurricane squared off once already this season in Tulsa on March 27, where Oklahoma won 5-2. Since Roddick’s arrival in Norman, the Sooners hold a 4-1 advantage and are 32-19 all-time.
“It is going to be a tough match tomorrow,” Roddick said. “We know each other well and it’s not always about tennis when you know each other so well. It is one of those matches were we know we have to come out, play well, execute and be aggressive. When we have opportunities to close sets, we have to do it. I’m sure they feel the same way. We know it is going to be a tough match either way.”
In the first round matchup, the Sooners won the doubles point for the 19th time this season after claiming wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong, ranked No. 56, cruised to an 8-1victory over UMKC’s Tim Akhemdov and Gustavo Guerin at the No. 2 spot. Tenth-ranked Costin Paval teamed with Dane Webb at the No. 1 spot to clinch the point for the Sooners following an 8-3 victory over the Roos’ Grant Fleming and Cameron Schoenhofer.
Oklahoma won three straight at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to clinch the match and move onto tomorrow’s showdown against Tulsa.
David Pultr earned the Sooners’ first singles victory after he dismantled UMKC’s Cameron Schoenhofer at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-0.
