NORMAN, Okla. - The Red squad beat the White, 61-41, in an OU men's basketball intrasquad scrimmage this morning inside the McCasland Field House before an estimated crowd of 1,000 appreciative fans. The scrimmage was comprised of three 10-minute periods.
Senior guard Ebi Ere finished with a scrimmage-high 18 points for the Red team, thanks in part to a third-period spurt in which he scored 11 straight points. Ere added five rebounds, three assists, a steal and two blocked shots on the morning. Sophomore forward Johnnie Gilbert, who missed preseason conditioning and the start of practice due to an abdominal injury, looked impressive in a 14-point (10 in the first period), five-board effort.
"Anything in transition, he's not as good as he's going to be," said head coach Kelvin Sampson of Gilbert. "We have to be patient with him. That injury was far more serious than we first thought. He's still not recovered from it. But Johnnie is Johnnie. He does a lot of little things to help you win."
Junior center Jabahri Brown scored six points and had a scrimmage-high nine rebounds for the Red while freshman forward Kevin Bookout recorded eight points, seven boards and a pair of steals. Senior guards Hollis Price and Quannas White chipped in with seven and six points, respectively. White had four assists while Price had three. Sophomore Blake Johnston, who rotated between the Red and White squads, scored his lone basket on a driving layup as a member of the Red.
Senior Jason Detrick paced the White team with 13 points while freshman and fellow guard De'Angelo Alexander contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Redshirt freshman forward Matt Gipson exhibited flashy play and finished with nine points and five boards.
Senior center Jozsef Szendrei produced two points and seven rebounds while 6-11 freshman center Larry Turner scored a basket and had four boards and two blocks for the White. Sophomore walk-on Michael Liggett made a three-pointer for his only points.
When suggested to Sampson that the Sooners looked considerably better at this morning's scrimmage compared to one inside the Field House last year at this point in the preseason, he said, "We should. We've got veterans now. We've got so many guys who have been through the wars and have a clear understanding of how we want to play.
"Our goal each week is to improve," added Sampson. "We look back to where we were last Saturday and we're definitely better now. That's the only thing we can worry about this time of the year."
The third-ranked Sooners play their first exhibition game Nov. 9 against Global Sports at Lloyd Noble Center and open the regular season Nov. 14 versus Alabama inside New York's Madison Square Garden as part of the AT&T Wireless Classic.
