Oklahoma Set for Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. -The University of Oklahoma men's golf team will compete in the 2003 Big 12 Championships this Monday and Tuesday (April 28-29 ) in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament will be played at the Southern Hills Country Club (par 71, 7,014). The 54-hole tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. OU will be the third seed behind No. 1 Oklahoma State and No.2 Texas. Texas is the defending Big 12 team champion.

The Sooners are coming off an impressive showing at the ASU Thundbird Invitational, firing a season-low score of 840 (-24) April 11-12. OU finished in fifth place, its fifth top-five finish of the season. Junior Doug Manor carded a career-low 67 in the first and last rounds, to finish tied for 11th place.

Coached by Jim Ragan, Oklahoma is ranked 22nd in the most recent Precept Coaches Poll.

John Kidwell (Sr., Dallas, Texas) - Making his 38th start as a Sooner ... Averaging a team-low 72.6 strokes per round this year... Carded a four-under-par 212 at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate and finished tied for 16th place. Shot a course-record 65 at the Sooner Invitational en route to winning the individual championship last fall... Named Golf World Player of the Week Sept. 27 and Big 12 Golfer of the Month for September... Led OU in a team-best six tournaments last spring...2002 third-team All-American... 2002 first-team All-Big 12.

Martin Flores (Jr., Mansfield, Texas) - Making his 33rd start for OU ... Finished in the top-20 in three of the four tournaments last fall... Fired a career-low 66 at the Sooner Invitational... Finished the 2002 Big 12 Championship tied for 26th with a score of 222.

Doug Manor (Sr., Garland, Texas) - Making his 14th career start for Oklahoma ... Fired a career-low 67 in the first and third rounds of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, finishing tied for 11th... Shot a then-career-low 68 in the last round of the Carpet Capital Classic last fall to finish tied for 10th, a career low... Finished tied for 23rd at the Sooner Invitational... Fired a then-career-low round of 69 in the second round of the 2002 NCAA regional.

Blake Martin (Jr., Stigler, Okla.) - Starting his 12th tournament for the Sooners ... Fired a career-low 67 in the first round of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, finishing tied for 14th place (also a career low)... Shot a then-career-low 68 in the last round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate last fall ... Shot a 69 in the second round of the Sooner Invitational.

Jim Renner (Fr., Plainville, Mass.) - Starting his eighth tournament for OU ...Has led the Sooners in four tournaments this year... Shot a three-round total of 212 (-1) at the Cleveland Golf Classic, finishing tied for eighth (a career low)... Fired a career-low 66 in the final round of the Waikoloa Intercollegiate and finished tied for 11th ... Shot a then-career-low 70 at the Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate while finishing tied for ninth, a team low.
