HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- OU begins its conference title defense Monday morning at the 2007 Big 12 Championship, held at the par-70, 6,593-yard Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Sooners, who won last year’s title at Tulsa’s Southern Hills Country Club with an 18-over-par 858, travel North to a Prairie Dunes course that has hosted seven previous Big 12 Championships (1997-02, 2004) and also was the annual site of the former Big Eight Championship.
Representing OU will be seniors Nick Sheedy and J.J. Wood, junior Phillip Bryan and freshmen Ben Blundell and Jesse Schutte.
Wood is one of three OU players that has started every tournament this season for the Sooners. Transferring from Pepperdine last summer, the Yuma, Ariz., native has carded four top-30 finishes on the year to lead OU.
“We are entering the tournament playing some of the best golf we have played all year, “ said head coach Jim Ragan. “Our difficult schedule is starting to pay dividends as these guys realize they can compete against the quality teams we face.”
First-round action of the 54-hole event begins Monday at 8 a.m. CDT. The Sooners, who are paired in round one with Colorado and Nebraska, will start Monday’s play on the 10th tee. The second round will be played Monday afternoon with Oklahoma playing the front nine first. Tuesday’s final-round pairings and tee times will be based on Monday’s results. The Sooners will either tee off at 8:00 a.m. or 8:50 a.m.
All 12 conference teams will compete in the event: Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, OU, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
Oklahoma, which had the nation’s 28th-most difficult schedule according to GolfWeek, carded four top-10 finishes in nine regular season tournaments. The Sooners competed against teams in GolfWeek’s top-25 on 40 occasions this season.
“Throughout the spring, we have been a couple of holes away from putting ourselves at the top of the leaderboard,” added Ragan. “Going into Monday’s play, we have emphasized finishing strong and are hoping to bring the Big 12 trophy back to Norman for another year.”
