NORMAN, Okla. - Mark Williams, men's gymnastics head coach at the University of Oklahoma, announced the addition of freshman David Henderson to the squad on Friday. Henderson is a native of Crosby, Texas, and was a star at the junior level for the Houston Gymnastics Academy. He has enrolled at OU for the spring semester and should be an immediate contributor to the team in its quest for the 2002 national title.
Henderson finished second in the all-around at the 2000 U.S. Junior National Championships and represented the United States at the Pontiac International Team Cup, held in Syracuse, N.Y., in November of 2000. Henderson and the U.S. team competed against international powers China and Romania in that event. He was coached at the junior level by Kevin Mazeika.
"David is an excellent gymnast who has the skills to compete for us in every event," said Williams. "The keys will be his consistency and how quickly he adapts to the team system we have in place."
Henderson's younger brother, Jamie, has signed a letter-of-intent in November to join the Sooners in the Fall of 2002. He has also been a member of the U.S. Junior National Team.
"David will be joined by his brother, Jamie, next fall and that should definitely bring a family atmosphere to our team," said Williams. "Both of them are among the top gymnasts in the country."
