NORMAN, Okla. -- Junior midfielder/forward Audri Habibi was named the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, becoming the second player in OU history to receive the accolade awarded to a first-year player in the conference (Lauren MacIver Oct. 1, 2002).
Habibi joined Nebraska’s Brittany Timko (offensive) and Texas A&M’s Kristin Arnold (defensive) as the conference’s other weekly honorees and is the second Sooner to receive a conference weekly honor this season. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12.
The Enid, Okla., native joined the Sooners this season after two years at Central Oklahoma and has sparked the Sooner offense off the bench since her arrival. Over the weekend, Habibi made her first and second career starts and was one of three Sooners to record five points in the two games.
On Friday against Missouri, Habibi put OU on the board with her second career goal and recorded an assist on the Sooners’ game-winning goal.
Two days later, Habibi followed the performance with two assists against Iowa State on Sunday. The two-assist performance against the Cyclones tied a school record as she became the second player to accomplish the feat this season (Kady Kelly) and 11th in OU history.
Despite seeing action in eight of OU’s 14 games this year, Habibi ranks second on the squad with three assists and third in points with seven. She has tallied all of those points in the last three games in which Oklahoma has posted a 2-0-1 record.
Habibi’s and the rest of the Sooners’ focus now shifts to its final road trip of the season. The Sooners will travel to Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 13 to face Texas Tech at 7 p.m. The weekend will conclude in Waco, Texas for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 15 against Baylor.
