OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma tennis programs were well represented at the Oklahoma Energy Classic Sunday night inside the Cox Convention Center as the OU women’s coaches, Dave Mullins and Brook Connelly, won the mixed doubles event and the Sooners men’s tennis coach John Roddick and his brother Andy Roddick fell to Mardy Fish and Dave Martin in doubles action.
The night began with a single-set Bedlam mixed doubles match between OU’s Mullins and Connelly and OSU assistant coach Jamea Jackson and incoming freshman Chris Haworth. The OU duo, which fell one match shy of advancing to the U.S. Open mixed doubles main draw, thrashed their Beldam competition and won the match, 6-2.
Following the mixed doubles portion, the Roddick brothers took to the court against Fish, No. 117 in the ATP doubles standings, and 92nd-ranked Martin in a pro-set doubles match. The Roddick brothers held a 2-0 lead, but dropped the next three points before knotting it up, 3-3. However, the Roddick duo managed just two more points in the match and fell, 8-5.
Andy and Fish concluded the night with a singles matchup, which Andy won 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
A portion of proceeds from the Oklahoma Energy Tennis Classic went towards the pending QuickStart Tennis project at the OKC Tennis Center and the Boys and Girls Club.
