NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team downed the Ducks of Oregon Friday night, 21-13, at the Howard McCasland Field House in front of a crowd of 503. The Sooners (11-4), who defeated Oregon State earlier today by a score of 24-15, won six matches to claim the victory. Oklahoma extended its all-time series against Oregon to 11-1.
The dual came down to a battle of heavyweights as the newest member of the Oklahoma squad, Jake Hager (1-2), clashed with Oregon's freshman Neil Phillips. Oregon needed a pin to take the dual, but it wasn't meant to be as Hager scored a takedown in the final 35 seconds to clinch the win for the Sooners.
"This was a good overall performance," said OU head coach Jack Spates. "There were some very bright spots, Bo Maynes showed character by coming back from a five point deficit and Jake Hager, who has only been on the team for two weeks, gave us an important win."
"We didn't shopw quite the intensity that we had during the National Duals, where we stepped up against better competition," Spates commented. "The bottom line is that we need to step it up every time we step on the mat." Oklahoma claimed the first three weights by decision. Senior Bo Maynes (29-4) entered the second period of action down by five points against Oregon's 125 pound wrestler Martin Mitchell, but rallied wiht three takedowns to win the match 9-8. Senior Witt Durden (15-3) defeated Jason Harless in a 4-2 decision at 133 pounds to put the Sooners on top by a score of 6-0. Freshman phenom Teyon Ware (20-4) held the Ducks scoreless when he decisioned Casey Hunt, 4-2, at 141 pounds.
Sophomore Danny Rubenstein (14-5) tied the 149-pound match up in the first period, but was unable to contain Tony Overstake who recorded the major decision, 16-5. In the 157-pound match junior Rafael Maturino (15-13) took on high school teammate Branson Phillips. Maturino and Phillips battled, with no score, through the first two periods before Maturino scored a takedown late in the third period.
Oregon's Luke Larwin decisioned Oklahoma's Wes Roberts (15-11) at 165 pounds, while senior Robbie Waller (22-5) battled past Shane Webster at 165 pounds, 4-2, to give the Sooners an eight point lead. Oklahoma's redshirt-freshman Derrick Brown took a commanding lead in the first period, 4-1, before being pinned at the 3:51 minute mark by Tony Rolen. Oklahoma's 197-pound senior Tom Grossman (13-1) recorded three takedowns in his 7-3 victory over Elias Soto.
Oklahoma will hit the mat on Sunday against conference rival Missouri at 2 p.m. in the Howard McCasland Field House.
