NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma gymnastics legends Kelly Garrison and Bart Conner, former Olympians and NCAA champions, will be honored in a dedication ceremony this Friday, Feb.4, at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla. Events are scheduled to begin before the OU/Nebraska men's and women's gymnastics meet at 7 p.m. Conner will also be the guest public address announcer for the men's competition.
While competing for the Sooners, Garrison earned the NCAA All-Around title in 1987 and 1988. She has the distinct honor of scoring the first perfect 10.0 in NCAA history (on the balance beam). In 1988, she was selected team captain of the Olympic team. Garrison is an nine-year member of the U.S. National Team and is a three-time World Championships team member. She also has the honor of having four gymnastics skill elements named after her, a result of her reputation for unique choreography and daring routines. Garrison was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame this past August.
Conner became OU's first Nissen Award winner in 1981. The award is presented to the year's most outstanding senior collegiate male gymnast. He was a seven-time conference champion and nine-time All-American for the Sooners. He also won three national championships and was named co-recipient of the Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year in 1981. Conner was a member of the 1980 Olympic team and won two gold medals at the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles.
The price for event tickets is $3 for adults and $1 for children. A post-event autograph session will immediately follow the conclusion of the gymnastics competition.
