NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma head gymnastics coach Mark Williams has announced his tri-captains for the 2002 season and they are seniors Everette Bierker and David Johnston, and junior Daniel Furney. The Sooners, who narrowly missed winning their fourth national championship in school history in 2001, have been working hard in preparation for the rapidly approaching season.

Bierker is a native of Bardonia, N.Y., and was runner-up on vault at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships last season. Johnston is from Dallas, Texas, and advanced to the individual finals in two events at the prestigious Rocky Mountain Open in 2001.

Williams is fully expecting Furney, a native of Austin, Texas, to be the Sooners' top all-around gymnast in 2001. He was a two-time All-American last season and is coming off of successful surgery on his right biceps muscle.

"We're looking forward to having Daniel healthy this season," said Williams. "I think this will be his year to be the team leader. He's got a strong personality, and David Johnston is a strong individual as well. David's always done the right thing for us and he's one of our real solid students."

OU has an intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for Dec. 8 at the Sam Viersen Center and begins its season on Jan. 20, 2002, when it hosts Iowa and Air Force at the OU Field House. In addition, the Sooners will be hosting the NCAA National Championships at the Lloyd Noble Center in April 4-6.
