NORMAN, Okla. - The 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team posted a final-round score of 299 (+11) on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla., to finish tied for first place with Kent State and Purdue. With several difficult pin placements set up around Karsten Creek Golf Course for the final day of competition, the Sooners were a combined 11-over-par through the first nine holes. However, the Sooners kept their composure shooting even-par on the back nine to hang on for their second first-place finish of the season. OU finished the three-day tournament with a total score of 883 (+19). It was the third time Oklahoma finished on top the leaderboard at the NCAA Central Regional having already done so in 1989 and 1995.

"I told our team that I expected them to win and I think they expected to as well," said Oklahoma Head Coach Jim Ragan shortly after the conclusion of the final round. "We've come close to winning several tournaments this spring and I felt that today might be our day. We started out pretty rough but our players came back again and played great on the back nine."

Sooner freshman Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) posted the best finish of his career at OU by placing second overall at three-under par after shooting a third-round 73. It was the second tournament this season that the freshman led the Sooners. Flores is only the third freshman in school history to lead OU at the NCAA Central Regional and his final score of 213 was also the lowest of any Sooner freshmen in an NCAA Central Regional.

"I thought Martin played outstanding," said Ragan. "For a freshman to step in a venue like this on this kind of golf course and shoot three-under is impressive."

OU sophomore John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas) made a critical birdie putt on the final hole to post the lowest round on the day for OU (72). Kidwell's final score of 221 (+5) placed him in a tie for 26th.

Junior Cody Freeman (Arnett, Okla.) shot a third-round score of 79 to tie for 71st (228, +12). One shot behind Freeman was senior Kelsey Cline (Yukon, Okla.), who equaled his first round score by posting another 75 to tie for 80th (229, +13). Rounding out the scores for OU was sophomore Matt Cohn (La Jolla, Calif.), who finished the day with an 84.

Oklahoma now advances to compete in the 104th annual NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships in Durham, N.C. at the Duke Golf Country Club on May 30 - June 2. The Sooners will be one of 30 teams competing in the four-day, 72-hole event.
