NORMAN Okla.- Former University of Oklahoma tennis player Anda Perianu advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw of the Australian Open after defeating seventh-seeded Stephanie Dubois of Canada 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday.
Perianu, a native of Romania, will face Germany's Vanessa Henke in the second round of qualifying. If Perianu advances she will need one more win before qualifiying for the main draw.
In May 2005, Perianu became the first OU athlete to reach the main draw in a professional tournament when she advanced to the second round of the French Open.
Perianu finished her career at OU in 2004 as one of the most decorated players in school history. An ITA All-American in 2004, she was also a three-time All-Big 12 and two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. She was the Big 12 champion in No. 1 singles in 2003 and 2004 and was three-time NCAA qualifier in singles and a two-time qualifier in doubles. Her .834 career winning percentage is a school record.
In April of 2006 Perianu added to her list of accomplishments when she was named to the Big 12’s Men’s and Women’s Tennis 10th Anniversary Team.
In between playing the pro circuit Perianu will return to Norman to serve as a volunteer coach for the women’s team.
