NORMAN, Okla. - Leslie Dunlap, the 2001 Big 12 Outdoor pole vault champion, will be competing in the USA Junior National Championship on Sunday. The University of Oklahoma sophomore-to-be will begin competition at 5:40 p.m. (Eastern) in the meet to be held in Richmond, Va.
The USA Junior Nationals is a meet for athletes who are 14-19 years of age. It annually attracts 800-900 of the sport's best young stars.
In addition, the meet serves as a qualifier for a number of other competitions throughout the next few months. The Junior Pan American Championships will be held Oct. 18-20 in Sante Fe, Argentina. International competition will also include a dual meet with Great Britain, August 18.
Dunlap has been ranked nationally throughout the indoor and outdoor season. The Choctaw native cleared a career best of 13-3.5 at the Texas Relays to rank third in the world on the juniors list. She qualified for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor championships as a freshman and finished third in the Big 12 Indoor in the pole vault.
She is the first of several Sooner track and field athletes to compete in the weeks ahead. A number of Sooners will travel to Jamaica for its national meet June 20-24 and several others will head to Eugene, Ore., for the USA Senior Nationals June 21-24.
