NORMAN, Okla.— The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team defeated No. 67 Texas Tech, 6-1, on Senior Day to close out the regular season Sunday afternoon.

Oklahoma (9-13, 3-8 Big 12) claimed its second win against a nationally ranked opponent this season against the Lady Raiders.  With the win, the Sooners now hold a 5-2 record in home matches this season, with one of those losses coming to No. 5 Baylor.

“I am really happy with how we came out and played today,” OU head coach David Mullins said.  “I think was the most complete weekend of tennis we have played all season.”

The Sooners claimed the doubles point and early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.

“We came out and took charge in doubles and won the point,” Mullins said. “I didn’t see us looking back from that point on.”

Sophomore Tara Eckel and freshman Marie-Pier Huet defeated Texas Tech’s Samantha Van der Drift and Kelsy Garland, ranked No. 58 nationally in doubles, at the No. 1 position, 8-3.  Eckel and Huet hold a 14-4 record on the season, and have won 12 of their last 14 matches.

Sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu and freshman Kristina Radan won at the No. 2 doubles spot, dropping only one game in the process.  The duo defeated Kerryn Potgeiter and Stefanie Peana of Texas Tech, 8-1.

The Sooners won five of the six singles matches to bring the final match score to 6-1.  Huet claimed the first singles match for the Sooners at the No. 3 spot, defeating Tech’s Simone Templeton, 6-1, 6-1.

Constantinescu continued her dominance in singles, defeating Samantha Van der Drift of Texas Tech at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-1.  Constantinescu leads the Big 12 at the No. 1 spot, going undefeated in conference play with an 11-0 Big 12 record.  Constantinescu holds an 18-2 record on the season, including three wins over nationally-ranked opponents.

Sophomore Maria Kalashnikova clinched the win for the Sooners, winning Oklahoma’s fourth match point at the No. 2 singles spot.  Kalashnikova defeated Kelsy Garland of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-0.

Eckel won the Sooners’ fifth match point at the No. 6 spot, defeating Tech’s Kerryn Potgieter, 6-2, 6-3.  Freshman Peta Maree Lancaster claimed Oklahoma’s sixth and final match point at the No. 5 singles spot, winning in the super-tiebreaker set against Tech’s Stephanie Peana, 6-3, 7-5, 1-0 (5).

The Sooners will start post-season play in Norman at the 2009 Big 12 Tennis Championships next week.  The women’s first rounds begin Thursday, April 23, and the men’s quarterfinals begin on Friday, April 24.  Both championship rounds will be played Sunday, April 26.

“After playing so strong against a great team like Baylor and then getting the win today, the team feels really great going into Big 12s,” Mullins said.  “I think we’re going to be a very tough opponent next week.”
