NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot its way into first place after 36 holes at the 31st Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Sunday in Norman. The Sooners carded a first-round 315 (+27) and second-round 314 (+26) at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course amid cool temperatures and gusty winds.
OU's 629 total leads second place Oral Roberts (633) by four shots.
"It was tough, but it was tough for everyone out there," said OU senior Kendall Dye. "We spent the last week playing out there with the north and the south winds and even in the cold when we didn't want to be playing in that. But we knew it would pay off and that's why we're sitting where we are."
Leading by one shot after round one, the Sooners endured the harsh weather to extend their lead after round two.
"It was a mentally tough day, and I felt good about the team," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "I think the last nine holes we started to fall a little bit, but overall our toughness was good."
Sophomore Ellen Mueller carded a second-round 75 (+3), placing her in a tie for first place with Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock. Dye also fired a second-round 75 to put her in third place, just one shot behind the leaders.
