DALLAS - Daniel McCutchen, Brad Hutt (Kansas State) and Keanon Simon (Oklahoma State) have been chosen as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball co-Pitchers and Player of the Week in voting by a panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played May 16-22.
The honor marked the second in McCutchen’s career, who shared the accolade earlier this season in March with Nebraska’s Joba Chamberlain.
The Norman native completed a successful weekend on Sunday with his seventh victory of the season against No. 11 Nebraska. Two days earlier, the senior did not make his regular start on Friday, but did make an appearance to strike out two batters in two innings pitched to earn his first save of the year. On the weekend, McCutchen (1-0, save) held Nebraska to two runs on 11 hits, in addition to striking out 13.
McCutchen entered the weekend as the Big 12's leader in strikeouts and padded that lead with 11 K's on Sunday against Nebraska. It marked the fifth time this season that the righty recorded double-digit strikeouts in a game and the first win when accomplishing that feat (1-3 in those games). McCutchen lasted eight innings on Sunday and allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks. On Friday, McCutchen held the Cornhuskers scoreless in two innings of work (two hits, one walk).
In 120 1/3 innings of work this season, McCutchen has 116 strikeouts. In his career, his 260 punch outs ranks ninth all-time at OU, just three behind eighth place (Jackson Todd, 1971-73) and six behind seventh place (Matt Reubel, 1989-1991).
In addition, McCutchen's effort on Sunday helped OU earn its 39th win of the year, the most in a regular season for a Sooner team since 1994 (College World Series Champions).
OU will begin play in the 2006 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship this week with No. 6 seeded Kansas on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The game will be broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM.
