CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma softball team came from behind to defeat Cal Poly 3-2 on Friday evening at the Cathedral City Classic. Senior Samantha Ricketts became the Oklahoma all-time career RBI leader with her solo home run in the fourth inning and OU added two runs in the fifth. The Sooners improved to 9-2 on the year, while the Mustangs fell to 2-3.

“We started off slow because we were swinging at pitches out of the strike zone,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso. “Late in the game, we made some adjustments. Samantha (Ricketts) was a good catalyst for us tonight. Allee (Allen) was huge coming out of the bullpen. Overall, it was a good team effort.”

Cal Poly led off the first inning with a single by Stephanie Tam. After Tam reached second on a passed ball, she advanced to third on a ground out. With two down in the inning, Melissa Pura singled to left field, scoring Tam.

The Mustangs added another run in the fourth when Pura led off the inning with a double. Stephanie Correia’s bunt single moved Pura to third and put runners at the corners with no outs for Cal Poly. Anna Cahn followed with a walk to load the bases. With one down in the inning, Nora Sobczak singled to bring home Pura and put the Mustangs up 2-0. With the bases still loaded, OU turned to freshman pitcher Allee Allen to close out the inning. OU got the two outs needed to end the inning without any additional runs crossing the plate.

The Sooners got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ricketts went deep over the left center field wall. The run scored was Ricketts’ 191st career RBI, giving her the outright Oklahoma career record.

Ricketts came up big for OU again in the fifth. Sophomore Dani Dobbs reached base on a hit by pitch. With two down, junior Amber Flores singled up the middle and sophomore Krystle Huey walked to load the bases. Ricketts then singled down the right field line to score Dobbs and Flores to put OU up 3-2.

A. Allen picked up the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. A. Allen struck out four of the nine batters she faced. OU start Kirsten Allen went 3 1/3 innings, giving up both Cal Poly runs.

Ricketts led the way for the Sooners at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and all three of OU’s RBI. Sophomore Chana’e Jones went 1-for-3 with a second-inning single. Flores was 1-for-2 with the fifth-inning single.
