PALM SPRINGS, Calif. The No. 10 Oklahoma softball team improved to 12-2-1 on the year with a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly (3-10) in the Palm Springs Classic Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma has gone 3-1 in Palm Springs with two games remaining.
Leading off the second inning, senior Nicole Denes picked up the Sooners’ first hit of the day with a single to center field, but was out on the next play after catcher Susan Ogden hit into a double play. However, sophomore Savannah Long got the Sooners going again with her first home run of the year to give Oklahoma the 1-0 advantage.
The Sooners opened it up in the top of the fourth with a leadoff single to right field by Amber Spaulding followed by an infield single by Kristin Vesely to set the stage for catcher Susan Ogden who blasted a hard hit double through the left side to score Spaulding and advance Vesely to third.
Long followed Ogden with her second hit of the day, a single to center, to score Vesely and move Ogden to third. Oklahoma wasn’t finished as junior Stacia Aleman’s earned an RBI with a sacrifice bunt to score Ogden and push the score to 4-0.
It was Spaulding again in the bottom of the fifth as her solo home run to left field gave the Sooners the 5-0 lead. It also marked the right fielder’s first of the year.
Spaulding and Long were the offensive leaders for the Sooners as each recorded two hits in the game while Long led OU with two RBI.
Sooner pitcher D.J. Mathis earned her first win of the season after earning her first start in a Sooner uniform. The freshman threw a one-hitter against the Mustangs until the sixth inning when Cal Poly threatened after stringing together four straight hits and collecting two runs to end the shutout. However, Mathis got the Sooners out of the inning and held Cal Poly to only two runs for the entire game.
In her first complete game, Mathis allowed only five hits against the 28 batters she faced. Mathis currently owns a 3.06 ERA.
Oklahoma will finish off the day with a 10:30 p.m. (CST) meeting against Pacific. Rounding out tournament action on Sunday, the Sooners will face No. 3 UCLA at 1 p..m. on ESPNU (DirecTV Ch.609).
