Softball Splits Series with No. 18 Baylor

WACO, Texas After a dominant offensive performance in game one of the doubleheader, the No. 21 OU softball team fell to No. 18 Baylor, 5-1, in game two of the twin bill on Monday night in Waco, Texas.  The Sooners fell to 27-15-1 and 4-7 in the conference while the Bears pushed their record to 26-16 and 6-4 in Big 12 action.

OU recorded only four hits to Baylor’s nine.  The four Sooners to record a hit were Norrelle Dickson, Jamie Fox, Kristin Vesely and Samantha Ricketts, who also added an RBI.

Baylor used a two out rally in the third inning  to score the first runs of the ball game as Kelly Osburn singled and stole second on the ensuing play.  Harmony Schwethelm’s RBI double knocked in Osburn for Baylor’s first run of the game.  The second run of the frame came off Ashley Monceaux’s RBI single.

The Bears extended their lead in the fifth as the Bears had the bases loaded and Schwethelm scored on a wild pitch.  BU plated another runner after Jordan Daniels’ RBI single added another run and pushed Baylor’s lead to 4-0 after five.

OU ended the shut out in the top of the sixth as Oklahoma rallied behind singles by Dickson and Vesely.  Ricketts’ RBI single plated Dickson and Oklahoma pulled within three but it would mark the Sooners’ lone score of the game. 

Baylor added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Miriam Romer scored on a ground out.

Baylor’s Lisa Ferguson recorded her 14th win of the year after allowing only one earned run on four hits in the complete game.

OU starter Nicole Denes fell to 6-4 on the season after giving up five earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Ending their seven-game road stretch with the Baylor series, the Sooners return home for a huge series against No. 1 Texas this Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday (12 p.m.) in front of a nationally televised audience in Norman, Okla.  The Sooners and Longhorns will square off on ESPNU in Friday’s action and appear on ESPN Saturday.
