DALLAS, Texas - The OU womens soccer team lost 3-2 in overtime on Thursday night to SMU in a non-conference contest in Dallas. The Sooners held the lead for majority of the game before SMU scored on a penalty kick with 5:49 left in the second half. SMUs Sarah Harvey scored the game winner with 52 seconds left in overtime.

I thought that we gave tremendous effort tonight, said OU head coach Randy Evans. SMU put us under pressure during the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime and scored an early goal in the second half to take the lead, 2-1. We tried to hang on to the lead but we gave up the penalty kick.

The Sooners, now 1-6 this year, were efficient, scoring two goals on three shots on goal. SMU outshot OU 25-5, including a 6-1 advantage in overtime.

The penalty kick was definitely the key play of the game, said Evans. Our two nemeses so far this season have been penalty kicks and corner kicks. We have given up a goal on a corner kick three games in a row, and this is the third game that we have lost because of a penalty kick.

Sophomore forward Jonette Coquat led the OU offensive attack by scoring both goals on four shots. Goalkeepers Ayn Toppin and Jana Cunningham combined for 11 saves in 104-plus minutes for the Sooners.

Jonette had a great game tonight, said Evans. She was definitely our main threat on offense.

The Sooners play next at TCU on Saturday in Fort Worth. OU beat TCU last season in Norman, 3-2. The Horned Frogs return 10 starters from a team that went 9-11 last year.
