Journal No. 1 - Sept. 2, 2004
As far as soccer goes, this summer was kind of hard to get all my work outs in. I studied abroad in Mexico for a month and three days after I got back from that I went on a family vacation to the Grand Canyon for 10 days. Before I left, we got a book for our team and it had a weekly schedule of what kind of workouts to do for each week to get ready for preseason. I took my book with me to Mexico and followed it as much as I could with my schedule.
When I came back there were two weeks left until preseason started, so I just ran my hardest with the team. Typically, as a team, we liked to get together without the coaches and work out because it was easier that way. They (coaches and training staff) gave us a list of many different workouts that involve sprints and stuff like that and we were tested on them during preseason.
This preseason, everyone worked so hard every time we hit the field, which was four times a day during preseason and now we’re in practice. Everybody is in so much better shape this year then we have ever been and it is all because we worked so hard in the preseason. We were able to get through 200 plus minutes in two overtime games this past weekend. I think we held our own pretty well. No one looked that tired. I definitely think that’s a plus for us right now. Hopefully we are in better shape than the teams on the remainder of our schedule.
The captain’s responsibilities are very spread out, on and off the field. For me its such a big responsibility to be the captain but at the same time its such an honor. I feel like I have a lot of experience that I can share with my teammates, mainly the younger ones, especially since this is my fifth year in college.
I have experienced many things, made all the mistakes that everybody makes and learned so much from them. I can show the girls that even if you’re having an off day, you can at least work your hardest and things will fall into place. There are a lot of on the field things that I can teach them, like work ethic and determination.
As far as working with the freshmen, I just kind of show them the ropes if they have any questions, like how to keep up in school while on the road. I believe and hope that my team can come to me and ask me questions about anything.
As for our team goals, every year we stress to each other that our main goal is to win the Big 12 Championship. Anything past that is frosting on the cake. Last year was the first year we made it to the NCAA Tournament and that is the bar we have to set for this year. We have our goals in our minds and reemphasize them every time we have a big game coming up. As a team, we have to remind each other of what we need to do to get to the next step.
Thats all for this week, thanks for checking out my journal. Please email me some questions with the link below and I will try and answer them in next week's journal entry. Hope to see you all at the game on Friday against TCU!
