ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics team ended its season with a fifth-place finish in the first competition session of the 2001 NCAA National Championships Thursday in Athens, Ga. The No. 12 Sooners (21-11) tallied a score of 193.875 in a field that included the winner, No. 2 UCLA (197.625), No. 4 Michigan (196.525), No. 3 Alabama (196.375), No. 6 Florida (195.825) and No. 20 Oregon State (193.775). The Bruins, Wolverines and Crimson Tide all advanced to the team finals competition on Friday.

Leading the way for OU was redshirt freshman Leah Mueller, OU's top all-arounder (11th, 39.000). Mueller also scored team highs on the floor exercise (9.800) with sophomore Patricia Aoki, the balance beam with Kasie Tamayo (9.750), and the vault (9.775). Sophomore Leticia Ishii (uneven parallel bars, 9.775) was OU's other top event finisher.

"It wasn't an exceptional performance by any means," said Oklahoma Co-Head Coach Becky Switzer. "However, the team did show it belonged here in Georgia and I was impressed with the way it represented the University of Oklahoma. This 2001 Sooner team is one of my most memorable squads."

Despite the outcome, Oklahoma qualified this year for the National Championships for the first time since 1989 and return every gymnast for next season. The meet marks Switzer's last as head coach after 18 years.
