NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team concluded its first tournament of the spring Friday, finishing in 10th place at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Sooners were two-over par on the day with a 290, and finished the tournament at one over par (865). BYU took home the team championship by firing a 32-under-par 832, while Arizona and Oklahoma State tied for second place at 839.
UNLV's Jeremy Anderson captured medalist honors by shooting three consecutive scores of 66 to end the tournament at 18 under par (198). The top Sooner finisher was senior Chris James, who shot an overall score of 212.
"We really did not do a good job of putting the ball in the hole," said OU coach Gregg Grost. "The golf course was set up harder, and it probably played more difficult. However, it didn't play hard enough for us to be over par on the day."
The Sooners will travel directly to Los Angeles to participate in the Southwestern Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. Redshirt-freshman Chris Cureton will be inserted into the starting lineup at the tournament in place of freshman Matt Cohn, who made his first collegiate appearance. Cohn struggled during the first round on Wednesday, but regrouped to shoot a 75 in the second round and an even-par 72 final round score.
"Today was very disappointing for me because we did not come out to play," said Grost. "We wanted to improve every day, but we took a step back today. However, the positive thing about this situation is that we get to get right back into action on Monday."
