NORMAN, Okla. - Behind the solid play of its three newcomers, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished a strong first round in third place at the 17-team Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., on Monday by firing a 299 (+11).

The Sooners are tied with host school New Mexico State University and trail leader UC Irvine (293) by six strokes and second-place Baylor (297) by two shots.  UC Irvine's Jane Chin leads the individual standings by two strokes after her 2-under-par 70.

"I think we had a decent day today and we were able to overcome some of the big holes that occurred," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said.  "This team is tough and very positive.  They will definitely be rewarded in the long run."

Leading the way for OU were a trio of first-year Sooners.  Sophomore Sara Hemingway, a transfer from Texas A&M, and freshman Brooke Collins both fired a 74 (+2) to stand in a ninth-place tie.  Freshman Kelly Short carded a 75 (+3) and is tied for 19th place.

"I am so proud of Sara, Brooke and Kelly," Ludvigson said.  "They played really smart.  This tells a lot about the depth of our lineup and proves that our newcomers are tough."

Sophomore Ellen Mueller, who is coming off a third-place finish at last week's Windy City Collegiate Championships, shot a 76 (+4) in Monday's first round in Las Cruces and is in 29th position.  Two strokes behind Mueller is senior Kendall Dye, who carded a first-round 78 (+6).  Competing individually, senior Staci Smoot shot an 82 (+10) in her first tournament action of the year.

"I think Ellen and Kendall will come in low for us tomorrow," Ludvigson said of her veteran leaders.  "Tomorrow we are looking forward to moving day and our goal is to score the lowest round of the day."

Tuesday's second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. MST with a shotgun start.
