Men's Tennis Ready To Build On Big Weekend

This Week in Sooner Tennis:  The Oklahoma men’s tennis team (4-0) takes to the practice courts this week after recording wins last weekend over Weber State (7-0), UNLV (6-1) and Texas-Arlington (4-0) in the UNLV Invitational.  The Sooners next match will not be until Sun., Feb. 29, when they face their first doubleheader match against Cowley County Community College and East Central at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. OU will face Cowley County at 9 a.m., and East Central at 2 p.m., Admission is free.

Series Record/Last Time:  The Sooners have defeated the Cowley CountyTigers for seven straight seasons since 1997, including a 7-0 win a year ago.
 Oklahoma has not played East Central since the 1994 and 1995 seasons when they conquered the Tigers, 9-0.
UNLV Invitational Recap:  The Oklahoma men’s tennis team (4-0) swept Texas-Arlington, 4-0, in the championship match of the UNLV Invitational Sun., Feb. 15, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas. The Sooners bring home the tournament title for the first time since 1990. 
 OU crushed Weber State, 7-0, in the first round, and then defeated tournament host UNLV in the semifinals.
Undefeated Sooners:  Five Sooners are undefeated in singles play after six matches. Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic), sophomores Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) and freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) are all 6-0 on the season, while junior Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) is 5-0. In doubles play, Fukala and Tanasoiu have a perfect record of 6-0 at the No. 3 spot.
OU Will Host 2004 Big 12 Championships:  Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Tennis Championships this spring at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30, and runs through Sun., May 2.  Admission is $15 for the four-day tournament. An adult single session is $5 and a youth single session is $2.
