Sooners Have Strong Third Day At Big 12 Track And Field

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - It was a strong performance in the field events for the Sooner women and a good day in the running preliminaries for both the men's and women's track and field teams that have the Sooners set up for what has the potential to be a good final day.

The women were in fourth place after seven events and the men were ninth after six events. The men advanced eight to the finals on Saturday, the women have five finalists. In addition, the Sooner men will have the pole vault, triple jump, 3000-meter steeplechse and 5,000-meter run final as well two relays in action on Saturday. The OU women are entered in the two relays as well as the triple jump.

Kansas State has the lead after three days in the women's field with 60.50 points. Missouri is the leader on the men's side with 53 points.

Bambi Carson, who repeated as the discus champion earlier in the day, finished fifth in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 49-9.25. Jessica Longfors finished eighth in the shot put after scoring in the discus earlier in the day with a fourth-place finish.

Jimyria Hicks is a double qualifier for the Sooners with the third-best time in the 200 and the fourth-best time in the 100. . Hicks' time in the 100 and 200 were career bests. Staneshia Bell qualified for the 100-meter dash final and Alesha Peel lowered her career-best mark in the 100-meter hurdles to 13.17 in the 100-meter hurdles to qualify for the final. Aisha Stringer qualified for the 800-meter final

Joey Scott and L'eron George were double qualifiers for the Sooner men. Scott got into the final in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. George made the final in the 100 and 200. LaBoris Bean had the best qualifying time in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 51.01. Ryan Clarke will join Scott and Bean in the 400 IH final on Saturday. Raoul Harvey qualified for the 400-meter dash final and Aldwyn Sappleton sprinted the final 100 meters to earn a spot in the 800-meter final, moving from fourth to .01 seconds behind first after the final curve.

OU had one NCAA automatic qualifier today (Bambi Carson in the discus) and nine NCAA provisional qualifiers, seven for the women and two for the men. Of those, two, Janel Hayes in the long jump and Jimyria Hicks in the 100, were first-time qualifiers. Peel (100-meter hurdles), Hicks (200-meter dash) and Jessica Longfors (discus) improved their previously posted NCAA provisional marks.

The meet will conclude Saturday with final events in 15 men's events and 14 women's events.
