NORMAN, Okla. -- Four University of Oklahoma women's gymnasts have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced this week. Three of the four earned first-team accolades.

The first-team members consist of sophomores Patricia Aoki (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Leticia Ishii (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Leah Mueller (Yukon, Okla.). Ishii leads the team this season with four all-around victories and is ranked 20th nationally in the all-around. Mueller has been OU's top gymnast on vault with eight titles in 11 competitions this year.

Junior Mariana Goncalves (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was the lone Sooner to earn second-team honors. On Jan. 27, Goncalves tied the school-record with a 9.975 on the uneven parallel bars.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the first-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better GPA, while the second team is comprised of those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher, either cumulative or over the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
