NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma senior Alex Madkins of Midwest City, Okla., has been named the Big 12 Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week the conference office announced this afternoon. The honor comes following his win in the men’s long jump at the Oklahoma Invitational.
Madkins jumped a season’s best 23 feet, three and half inches on his third attempt Saturday to take the lead in the long jump competition. His next closest competitor turned in a best mark of 22-11.75 on his final attempt as Madkins won his second consecutive long jump title at the meet.
Madkins was one of five Sooners to earn an individual title on Saturday, and the only OU male to do so. His jump is the 12th best in the league and his efforts boosted Oklahoma’s men to No. 21 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings.
The Sooners return to action this weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.
