TULSA, Okla. – Senior women’s tennis player, Peta Maree Lancaster, won two rounds of singles in the qualifying round of the 2011 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships Thursday in Tulsa, Okla., to advance to the tournament’s Main Draw.
Lancaster defeated Janelle Fun of Arkansas State in the opening round, 6-0, 6-1, before topping Saint Louis’ Maria Toro Moreno in the second round, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (5).
With the wins, Lancaster earned one of just eight open spots in the singles Main Draw which begins Friday. Lancaster will join her five OU teammates in Main Draw competition.
Lancaster improved to 6-3 overall in singles this fall and has won five of her last six matches.
The 2011 USTA/ITA Central Championships feature some of the best players in the country from teams in the Central Region including, Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Wichita State.
OU has won the Central Doubles Championship the last two years and also claimed the singles title in 2009. Former Sooner, Ana-Maria Constantinescu, won the singles title in 2009 and both doubles titles with partners Alice Radu (2010) and Teona Tsertsvadze (2009).
The Sooners are coming off a strong performance at the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern University where the team finished with a combined record of 13-5 in singles and 6-5 in doubles.
Freshman Nicole Long leads the team in both singles and doubles with a 7-0 record in singles and 4-2 in doubles this fall.
Long and sophomore transfer Whitney Wofford started the season with 4-0 records after the Sooner Fall Invitational in Norman. Long remains undefeated in singles while Wofford is 6-1.
